Description
This was Neta's first "Have to have it" antique in the late 60s. We could not afford it, of course. The 0 we paid would be about 00 today. The exterior furniture wood is one I probably am not allowed to name, as the South American variety is endangered. This of course is Chinese, but the algorithm can't tell the difference. It is a dark, reddish brown, closely grained furniture wood. The painting includes gold paint, and is well done. The carved figures are made of stone, mother of pearl, bone and small amounts of other rare material
.
The interior is lined with camphorwood, used for thousands of years to prevent insect damage in stored clothing, fabrics and furs. It has a movable (sliding) removable box at the top for smaller items. Surprisingly, there are no stains on the raw inside wood - surprising to me, at least, as I have rarely seen an antique trunk or chest of drawers without one.
40" long, 20" wide, 23" tall. Decorated on top and front (not on ends and back). Engraved brass hasp and corners as shown.
I have been able to find only 2 examples similar to this, both in the collection of a California museum.
