    Description

    Known as a
    chobadansu
(document tansu chest), this chest was made in the late Edo era (c.1850) of hinoki (cypress) face and sugi (cryptomeria) case and interiors. The
    choba - dansu
was a special chest used to store document, accounts, money and other valuables for a business enterprise.  This chest has two secret sections for storage of top secret documents (see picture 6 with the lower area removed to show the secret area).  Also see picture 10 from the book
    Tansu
by Ty Heineken showing the second secret area which is accessed by removing the two lower doors.
    This tansu chest is made
with pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint
construction (see picture 11).    This chest has all its 170 year old
    deep rich patina
    .
This tansu chest has a total of 11 drawers of various sizes and four sliding doors and two secret compartments (see pictures).
All drawers and doors move easily without binding.
This chest has a century and a half  old original
    warm aged patina
and, having been used lovingly for over a century,  it remains in
    very
    fine original antique condition
and should serve one well for another century of use.
It measures 36" wide by 38 1/2" high by 15 1/2" deep (92 x 98 x 40 cm).  A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and
    very solid and functional
    piece of furniture.
