Description
Here we have a collection of Locomobile literature, photos, and miscellaneous ephemera.It consists of 6 scrapbooks of original 11 x 14 photographs of the Locomobile factory detailing the operations used to make the car circa 1920. Book 1 consists of 14 car photos; book 2: 37 photos of various machining and inspecting operations of the engine; book 3: 20 photos showing paint and other packaging operations; book 4: 34 photos of misc factory machining operations; book 5; 39 photos of factory machining operations and inspections; book 6: 27 photos of engine, steering wheel and other components. There's approximately 180 photos overall.
One blue binder of roughly 65 pages of miscellaneous literature, factory correspondence, stock certificates, small sales catalogs, and manuals. Misc years 1905 - late 1920's.
One black binder of Locomobile ads from 1901 -1926. There's roughly 92 ads.
One black binder of reproduction 8 x 10 factory photos detailing operations, and four new car buyer photos, 61 in all. Circa 1912-1915.
One parts manual for models 8-66, 8-70, 8-80 models.
There might be some lingering materials, small blue prints et al, that I haven't itemized. Whom ever buys this collection will get it thrown in as it gets packed up.
The original factory photos are a treasure trove of historical procedures used to make the car. When Locomobile was taken over by William Durant, the story goes that all records dating back to the start of the Locomobile Company were trashed. The reasoning was that they wanted to move forward with new ideas and leave the past behind. In fact the reproduction photos that I have were made sometime ago from the glass plates and there are a few that show they were broken and retrieved from a fire. Most likely the furnace when the materials were destined to be destroyed.
