Description
I just acquired this beautiful walnut bowl from an estate here in Oklahoma. It was made by the well known Oklahoma Cheyenne Indian artist, Nathan Hart, and measures about 6 1/2" in diameter and 4" tall. Clearly signed on the bottom "Nathan Hart" "NLH" "Walnut" and "11080 12/00".Great condition - it does have two green marks on the bottom that do not wipe off. It may have been something that was embedded in the wood as the tree grew. I'm not sure, but probably could be removed if wanted. Not really seen when sitting.
Nathan began his wood turning adventure in 1999 or 2000, and this vessel may be one of his earliest efforts. The 12/00 may indicate the date this was created (12/00). Nathan's pieces range in size from 2" to 20" and he uses a variety of native Oklahoma woods like pecan, hackberry, walnut and oak.
He started showing his pieces at the Santa Fe Indian Market in 2000 and very quickly sold every piece he took. His works are now shown in galleries and museums across the United States. He may be the only professional Native American wood turner in the country.
